The devil was in that building”: New Orleans church orphanages’ dark secrets

Systemic failures that subject vulnerable foster youth to horrific physical abuse, sexual abuse, and severe emotional abuse cause irreversible lifelong damage and profound personal injury. This 2023 report by Jason Berry  and Ramon Vargasfrom The Guardian uncovers a disturbing, culture of sadism and exploitation at Hope Haven and Madonna Manor, two state-funded, church-run New Orleans children’s institutions that effectively operated as unpoliced prisons for dependent youth. Survivors share stories of terrors, including daily molestation, genital torture, and masked group rapes orchestrated by religious figures like Brother Harold Ehlinger and Sister Martin Marie, where running away only invited police capture and forced return to the abuse. Rather than offering protection, high-ranking administrators, including Monsignor Ray Hebert, who later destroyed his investigative notes in violation of canon law, actively covered up the pedophilia, buried outcries, and later used $11.7 million in secret settlements paired with strict non-disclosure agreements to shield the perpetrators. This article highlights the devastating downstream consequences of this institutional betrayal, pointing out that untreated trauma funneled these children into adult pipelines of severe legal trouble, chemical restraint, and incarceration, all while the New Orleans Archdiocese continues to weaponize its complex bankruptcy proceedings to suppress incriminating documents and evade federal accountability.
