North Carolina mother arrested after infant admitted for drug withdrawal

The failure to protect vulnerable infants from severe physical abuse, emotional abuse, and the threat of sexual abuse inflicts catastrophic damage and personal injury starting from the moment of birth. According to a June 2026 report by FOX 5 Atlanta, this devastating reality is shown by the recent arrest of 34-year-old Tosha Savannah Eller of Murphy, North Carolina, who faces a felony charge for exposing her newborn to a lethal combination of controlled substances. After giving birth, Eller abandoned her child at the hospital and ceased all contact, leaving medical staff to transfer the infant to the intensive care unit at Erlanger East Hospital to undergo intense treatment for severe drug withdrawal. Toxicology reports revealed the newborn tested positive for fentanyl, Ecstasy (MDMA), and amphetamines, prompting the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office to launch a desperate search and secure an arrest warrant on June 11. Eller was taken into custody shortly after, as local authorities issued a firm public statement prioritizing the protection of innocent children and demanding strict accountability for parental negligence that leads to such heartbreaking and tragic outcomes.
