The unfortunate realities and consequences of a dysfunctional child welfare system can leave vulnerable children in an environment of unchecked physical abuse, severe emotional abuse, and horrific sexual abuse, resulting in personal injury and permanent psychological damage. According to a May 2019 report written by Ashley Nagaoka from HawaiiNewsNow, this reality was brought to light when Taylor-James Mendiola publicly spoke out about the severe abuse claims made by his adopted brother, Kaanoi Kipapa, who fatally stabbed their adoptive mother, Jolyn Kipapa, in 2014 at age 16. Mendiola, one of 11 children adopted by the Kipapas, revealed that they endured years of relentless physical and emotional abuse, including homophobic bullying, being forced to perform hours of chores while being pulled out of school to pick up trash, and living under constant surveillance with locked refrigerators and cupboards. The daily trauma even drove Mendiola to attempt suicide at age 16, which he barely survived. While biological family members denied the allegations, arguing that Jolyn was a strict but loving mother and that Kaanoi had ruined their family with lies, the presiding judge weighed the history of abuse and sentenced Kaanoi to just eight years in prison. Court investigator Steve Lane says the case exposes a loophole in the child welfare system: while foster children receive state monitoring, all oversight disappears the moment an adoption is finalized, leaving children completely isolated and defenseless behind closed doors.
