Eagle Butte Man Found Guilty of Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child

The reality of unchecked child predation exposes children to severe physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse, causing high levels of psychological damage and personal injury that forever changes their lives. According to an April 2026 press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota, this horrible reality is shown by the recent federal conviction of 47-year-old Shane Bruguier of Eagle Butte. After a three-day jury trial, Bruguier was found guilty of aggravated sexual abuse of a child for an incident occurring on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation between January and November of 2015. Evidence presented in court revealed that an innocent eight-year-old victim woke up to find Bruguier actively assaulting her after he had removed her undergarments. Because the severe crime occurred in Indian Country, the case was heavily investigated by the FBI along with tribal law enforcement and prosecuted federally under the Major Crimes Act as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative. After the April 16 verdict, Bruguier was put into the custody of the U.S. Marshals pending a formal sentencing hearing, where he now faces a mandatory minimum of 30 years to life in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and potential restitution to help address the profound harm inflicted on the young survivor.
